Should Very Sick People Have a “Right to Die”?

Euthanasia or the “right to die” has become debated issue recently as some countries such as Netherlands, Switzerland and Oregon State have already made it legal. However, most of the world still considers it to be a crime, and it must not be permitted by all means. Fans of euthanasia claim that it is mercy, freedom to choose, or even saving money. This is a deviated way of thinking calls for destroying every aspect of humanity and ethics. People who support euthanasia look at it only from materialistic point of view based on wrong assumptions.

Mercy is the main argument of people who are for euthanasia; it is merciful to end the unbearable suffering of a person. Some believe that people should have the right to end their suffering when their lives lose all the quality, and that is a crime to force people to live painful life they do not wish to continue (Girsh). On the contrary, it is supposed when people suffer, they get supported emotionally, given suitable pain relievers till their lives end naturally. It has nothing to do with mercy to kill people just to stop their suffering. Simply nobody knows weather that suffering will end by the end of a person’s life. Nobody knows which is more painful, either to kill patients with toxic doses or to let them die naturally. Also some corrupt doctors might abuse patients and misuse euthanasia just for their or somebody else’s good (RitaL and Hamlon ).

Cost reduction is another argument of those who support physician-assisted suicide. Merrill claims that in spite of the fact that the health care system in US is becoming more cautious in making sure that the money is not wasted, physician-assisted suicide can save more money to be exploited by others (Matthews). However, permitting euthanasia for the sake of cost reduction will make it the first option for poor people who cannot afford health care expenses. According to an article in New York State, assisted suicide and euthanasia would carry us into new terrain. The article states that American society has never sanctioned assisted suicide or mercy killing. It also mentions that Americans believe that the practices would be profoundly dangerous for large segments of the population, especially in light of the widespread failure of American medicine to treat pain adequately or to diagnose and treat depression in many cases. The article believes that risks would extend to all individuals who are ill. The risks would be most severe for those whose autonomy and well-being are already compromised by poverty, lack of access to good medical care, or membership in a stigmatized social group as the article insists. The risks of legalizing assisted suicide and euthanasia for these individuals, in a health care system and society that cannot effectively protect against the impact of inadequate resources and ingrained social disadvantage, are likely to be extraordinary according to the article (“New York State”).

The value of life is another ambiguous term that people look at from different perspective. Dan Brock, a director of the university program in ethics and health at the Harvard Medical School believes that no further life at all is still better than life with poor quality. He claims that “continued life is seen by the patient as no longer a benefit, but now a burden” (Brock). Nonetheless, Wesley Smith, a consultant in International Anti- Euthanasia Task force, believes that accepting euthanasia would alter the principle of equality-of-human-life with the practical “death culture”. The “Death culture” concept declares that intentional ending of people lives is the solution for the life’s most tough challenges (Wesley).

It should be obvious that euthanasia is just a crime of murder that does not differ much from other murders. It assumes that accelerating the patient’s death is mercy, and also saves some money. However, human ethics have been and would still be incomparable with materialistic criteria. Accepting euthanasia is dangerous and might get out of control someday; it might get broadened in the future, and become the easiest way to not face the life’s challenges. It would become another face for suicide but legal suicide. There is no doubt that euthanasia must be prohibited all over the world and considered as a crime before it becomes the solution for whoever is facing a problem such as a broken heart or business loss or an exam failing. People sometimes face problems and be in situations where they wish if they were died. If people have got the right to die whenever they wish, the human being might face the extinction someday.

The mass media have an adverse effect on moral standards

Barely hundred years ago, if you wanted to stay informed about what was going on the world, we had to rely on word of mouth, at best, newspaper. Because communication technology was very basic, the news we received was days or weeks old. The mass media, especially television and internet, are now the most important source of information. Every day they provide people with pieces of useful and valuable information. But in recent years informative and education programs have given way to immoral and sensational shows. Therefore, the influence of mass media on our kids, teenagers and society becomes widespread.

First of all, television has quite an impact on young people because more and more TV programs are bombarding people with images of sexuality. They become sexually active. According to Bleakley’ study, “The studies have found that children who watch a lot of sexual content are more likely to hold gender stereotyped attitudes toward sex, and become sexually active” (344). Furthermore, many people also assert that the portrayal of sex promotes promiscuity and undermines moral standards. Likewise, Newspaper use images of death and grief to attract readers’ attention. Consequently, we consider such behavior as normal and we are becoming accustomed to this.

Secondly, the mass media have an extremely negative effect on children. It is a fact that there is too much aggression on TV. Their nature becomes more violent. There are many examples when children created havoc in their schools in shooting accidents. Children could think that they are super heroes and jump from high rise building thus creating a threat for their life. They may become more aggressive and rude in nature. Their health may be spoiled due to watching excessive television. They may concentrate less on their studies. Its excessive use may decrease their memory retention power. “In the past years there have been some cases of kids carrying a gun at school and even hurting others with it. Those kids have been linked to excessive use of violent video games and war images” (Rayuso). Another problem is that real war is used as a form of entertainment by the media, we should make our kids and teen aware that war is not a form of entertainment and that there is no win or lose like in video games, in real everyone lose.

Moreover, newspapers have to use provocative language and striking pictures in order to guarantee high sales. Therefore, mass media affects teenagers by this way, they buy what they see on newspaper, and what is acceptable by society based on the fashion that the media has imposed them. These cause children to behave badly. For example, they buy what they are told to be good for them. “Young people are in a stage of life where they want to be accepted by their peers, they want to be loved and be successful. The media creates the ideal image of a beautiful men and women and tells you what the characteristics of a successful person are; you can see it in movies and TV. It is a subliminal way to tell you that if you are not like them you are not cool yet so it is time to buy the stuff they buy and look like they look” ( Rayuso).

Finally, kids who watch more TV start smoking at an earlier age. The relationship between television viewing and age of starting smoking was stronger than that of peer smoking. For example, one of my friends started smoking at age 10 because he was watching movies a lot and saw people smoking on movies shows on television. Say researchers who analyzed data from a four-year study of more than 1,200 youngsters by the University of Massachusetts Medical School, “children who are allowed to watch movies are more likely to smoke” ( Chyke).

To conclude, it is fact that the mass media do not have much beneficial effect on us. They constantly show us scenes full of violence and devastating images of death. But television and the newspaper will always have some adverse effect on us if earning money is media’s sole aim.

The Marriage Journey in Libya and South Korea

Due to the globalization, wedding ceremonies seem to become somehow alike all over the world. However, there are still some distinct traditions in the marriage process between Libya and South Korea. The differences are starting from choosing the spouse to the honeymoon including: dating and engagement, wedding and gifts exchange, and expenses honeymoon.

Generally speaking, Eastern cultures are conservative to some extent, and the behavior of an individual is significantly influenced by the society. Dating is still different between the Libyans and the South Koreans. In South Korea, sweethearts find each other’s by themselves through dating similarly to the Western cultures. According to that, Korean couples start hanging out, eating out, and even sleeping with each other once they get on well with each other. On the contrary, dating is strictly prohibited and considered an evil deed that brings big shame to individuals and families in Libya. Consequently, a Libyan man chooses his spouse based on characteristics that can be examined without being very close to her such as high morals, honesty, faithfulness, mercy, patience and beauty. A spouse with these qualities can be found either by the man himself who could be her workmate, classmate, or relative or by somebody else like a sister, a friend or parents could recommend a spouse for a man. Once he found her, the man asks the girl indirectly whether she accepts getting married to him or not by sending his sister, his aunt, or his parents to her.

Engagement is also dissimilar in the two cultures, and it has an important difference for the Libyans and South Koreans. While the engagement in South Korea is just an opportunity to introduce the couples to each other’s families, it is the most important chance for the couples to know about each other before they decide whether to get married or not in Libya. Although it is not the time yet for the fiancées to be involved in any sexual relationship, it is the time when they can meet regularly in public places and discuss everything that helps to make the decision of getting married or breaking the engagement. The engagement typically lasts for six months, yet it still depends on individual couples both in Libya and South Korea.

Again, wedding ceremonies are prominently different comparing Libyan and South Korean traditions. To illustrate, the wedding in South Korea starts when the groom sends Ham (silk garment) combined with a proposal letter wrapped in red cloth called Bojagi to stem all bad spirits. Thereafter the bride makes clothes for her parents-in-law using the Ham and sends them back as they are called Yedan to the groom’s home. More over both the families of the bride and the groom gather in one place to make the wedding party. Long time ago, it used to be held in the bride’s house not like now in hotels and rented halls (Kim 1-3). On the other hand, there are two separate wedding parties’ celebrated by each family of the spouses in Libya. In other words, each family is responsible for its party expenses, and each family has its own guests who are usually the friends, neighbors, and relatives of the spouse and her/his parents. Another difference between the Korean and Libyan wedding is that the groom and his family send Kiswa which combines many gifts for the bride like, Jewelries, handmade traditional dresses, shoes, perfumes, make up accessories, clothes, and also some gifts for the bride’s parents in addition to sweets and cakes.

Besides, expenses and financial responsibilities are not the same to the groom in Libya and South Korea. In fact the groom in Libya is fully responsible for providing the accommodation, furniture, appliances and the other things necessary for married life. Whereas the groom in South Korea is only responsible for the accommodation, and the bride’s duty is to provide the furniture and appliances.

Furthermore, the groom in Libya has to give amount of money called Mahr to the bride and her parents as a dowry which doesn’t exist in South Korean tradition. Also the groom in Libya has to pay for all expenses honeymoon including tickets, hotels, entertainment, meals and even shopping bills. However, both the family of the bride and the groom in South Korea are sharing expenses honeymoon.

To sum up, the marriage journey that single people take to become married is totally different in Libya compared to South Korea. For instance, while dating in South Korea is the way by which couples find their matches. However, it is not allowed for couples to do that because it is prohibited in our religion. Further, engagement is much more significant for Libyan people than South Koreans. Regarding the gifts exchange, Libyans groom provides the Kiswa while the South Korean groom provides the Ham. In addition to that, Libyan groom is responsible for more financial commitments than the South Korean groom such as appliances, dowry and honeymoon.
